Working with
Trade Show Display Companies

Some trade show display companies are flexible and accommodating, while others are less so. During construction of your exhibit, you are likely to need to make modifications from the original plan. Here are questions to ask to determine whether modifications are worth the extra expense:

  1. Will the projected modification affect the completion time of the exhibit? Usually there are many steps involved in developing and producing displays, and display companies have the timing for each step carefully scheduled. Changes in the time table can result in extra expense for you, so be sure to find out whether your changes upset the entire schedule before deciding to go ahead.

  2. Do you want this modification to your exhibit for all future shows? A neat feature you want to add for your next show may not be one you want to have as a permanent part of your booth. If you're deciding to include a special feature after the design had been agreed on, most trade show exhibit companies will add on extra for the change in plans plus the inevitable rush that is now needed to complete your exhibit to order.

  3. Can your trade show budget bear this extra expense? Consider your sales and marketing goals for the show, and your projected expenses. Will the payoff for making a modification outweigh the added expense?

  4. Is there a cheaper way to effect the same change to your exhibit? Many display companies can suggest less expensive alternatives to a last minute change you decide on. Have a brainstorming session with your representative from the exhibit building company, and consider all possible alternatives for the change you're considering.

  5. Is the change necessary for the function of your booth? The way your booth works is more important than the way it looks. Cosmetic changes, especially if made at the last minute, can be cost prohibitive. Be sure any modifications made after the timetable and design have been agreed on are essential.

In summary, most trade show companies are happy to work with you to create the booth you want - but changes made in midstream will almost certainly run up the cost. Be sure any modifications are actually necessary before having them done.
