Trade Show Display Color Tips

Your trade show display makes a big impact with its color scheme. How do you select the colors for your booth to create the desired effect and achieve your exhibit goals? Here are some helpful tips:

  • Trendy colors give your booth an up-to-the-minute, leading-edge impression. Because they tend to be popular colors, they also draw more visitors than old standby colors like "IBM blue".

  • However, trendy colors go out of style quickly and can make your trade show display seem dated and trite once the trend passes in favor of newer colors.

  • Design your exhibit so that colors can be updated easily and inexpensively.

  • Decking your booth out in your company's colors may (or may not) be a great way to emphasize your image. Just be sure the colors are ones that can dominate a booth's visual impact gracefully.

  • Consider the clothing colors of your booth's staff. If possible, clothes should coordinate tastefully with the rest of the booth. Also, plain colored clothes don't distract visitors' eyes from your exhibit as much as clothes with patterned fabrics do.

  • Remember that cool colors (blues, greens, purples) are soothing and restful while warm colors (reds, oranges, yellows) are active and stimulating. Use cool colors where you want your customers to stop and spend some time, and warm colors where you want to urge them to action.

  • Complimentary color schemes (red + green, orange + blue, yellow + purple) are dynamic and eye-catching.

  • Monochromatic color schemes (several shades of the same color) are harmonious and stable.

  • Color can be added to your exhibit via the use of lighting.

  • Flowers are an appealing and tasteful way to accent your color scheme.

  • Pale colors may be difficult to keep clean, given the public nature of trade shows; you may want to use them sparingly.

Color bears a huge influence on the image and message communicated by your trade show display, so it's worthwhile to spend time choosing your color scheme carefully.
